Anthony Gordon will become one of Newcastle United's top earners when he completes the formalities of signing a new deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old is close to penning a contract extension at St James' Park after reaching a verbal agreement over the terms of the deal.

A breakthrough in talks has been made in recent days to end speculation over Gordon's immediate future.

The Magpies' hierarchy made a new deal for Gordon a priority as he had entered the final two years of his contract, which had interested clubs on alert.

The latest development comes after reports that the winger's head had been turned by talks over a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

Now, he has landed a "huge" pay hike and will join the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes in the top bracket of the Magpies' earners, receiving upwards of £140,000 per week.

Anthony Gordon contract update emerges at Newcastle United

He has established himself as one of the most important players at the club when he is playing at his best, with his pace and direct attacking threat providing a different dimension to the side.

After scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists last season, the club were keen to do all they could to see him commit to a long-term deal.

But he showed he was back to his best in Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw against Man City by winning and then converting the penalty equaliser.
