Tottenham have confirmed that midfielder Anton Walkes has agreed terms to join League One side Portsmouth on loan. Spurs announced on their

on Monday afternoon that Walkes, 20, has moved to Fratton Park for the rest of the season.

Portsmouth are currently in the top-half of League One in ninth place and will no doubt see Walkes are someone who can help the south coast push for a spot in the play-offs between now and May. Walkes, who can play as a centre-back, midfielder, or right-back, has only ever made one appearance in the Tottenham senior side but is still tipped to have a promising future. He spent 2017 on loan at MLS outfit Atlanta United and was a key part of their first-team as they reached the MLS Cup play-offs. Portsmouth-based newspaper

has previously reported that Pompey manager Kenny Jackett has plans to field Walkes as a midfielder during the duration of his loan spell.

Football Insider verdict

Walkes is still young but has some way to progress before he can become a top-flight player. Not everyone develops at the rate of Dele Alli, with others it takes a lot of time and a half-season in League One could be of great benefit to the 20-year-old utility man. Walkes played as a defensive midfielder for Atlanta at times in 2017 and Jackett will no doubt have done his homework on the Spurs youngsters to see that he possesses qualities in that area of the field. Walkes only signed a new deal with Tottenham that lasts until 2019 in September, so that could be a move made by the club that ensures the player leaves North London for a decent fee.
