Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Celtic "will go down to the wire" in their pursuit of Charlton Athletic defender Alfie Doughty, according to Frank McAvennie.

The former Hoops and St Mirren striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, tipped two new arrivals at Parkhead before the transfer deadline on 5 October.

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer claimed last weekend that the Scottish Premiership champions are "taking liberties" with "silly offers" that the club will not entertain for the 20-year-old.

Doughty has started both of Charlton's league games this season and scored in 2-0 over Crewe Alexandra on the opening day of the season.

When asked by Football Insider if he was confident of a deal for the wide-man being completed in this window, McAvennie said: "This is Celtic, it is what they do.

"You would never spend £750,000 on a left back in my day! It is not too much money but the club have got to be sure that the kid is going to hit the ground running and he is still a young boy.

"Over a million pound for left-back, unless they are 1 million per cent sure that he can come in and slot straight into the team, is a lot of money for a left-back in Scottish football. It is even more when you think about Covid and all of that.

"There are two weeks left and Celtic will go down to the wire, there is no point in moaning about it because they always do. They will buy a couple and then kick on."
