Rangers are pushing for a deal to sign Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall on loan in their 13th summer signing, Football Insider sources understands.

Rangers have held talks with Forest and have offered to pay a substantial loan fee to land the England Under-21 international.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Forest have reservations about sending Worrall to play in the Scottish Premiership feeling it would be better for him to stay in the Championship, with Ipswich also keen on securing the defender's services.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is pulling out all the stops to try and persuade them to allow Worrall to move to Glasgow with the 23-year-old understood to be keen on a move to Ibrox to work under the Liverpool legend.

Gerrard revealed last week he was an admirer of Worrall as he looks to bring in another centre-back before the transfer window closes next week and his need for defensive reinforcements would have increased after seeing his side concede three goals to Motherwell on Sunday.

Worrall, who was the subject of a £10million offer from Burnley earlier this year, has dropped down the pecking order in Aitor Karanka's first-team plans at the City Ground.

The 23-year-old has not figured for Forest at all so far this season and is effectively fifth-choice centre-back at the City Ground behind the likes of Danny Fox, Tobias Figueiredo, Michael Dawson, Michael Hefele and Jack Robinson.
