Brendan Rodgers is emerging as a shock new candidate for the Nottingham Forest manager's post, sources have told Football Insider.

The Celtic boss is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over an extension have reached a stalemate.

Rodgers, 52, is expected to be sounded out by Forest as they weigh up the contenders to replace Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian was sacked almost immediately after Forest's 3-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea yesterday afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers joins three others in race for Nottingham Forest job

Sean Dyche is the frontrunner to replace Postecoglou, while ex-Man City boss Roberto Mancini and Fulham's Marco Silva are also in the running.

Rodgers is an intriguing fourth option and his track record, which includes the FA Cup and four Scottish league titles as well as extensive Premier League experience at Liverpool and Leicester City, could be appealing to Forest.

Over the last few months, Rodgers has been growing frustrated at Celtic due to the lack of transfer spending by the board, which could increase the likelihood that he leaves the Glasgow giants.

The Northern Irishman is believed to be keen to return to the Premier League and his style of play is attractive to Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Nottingham Forest now have no room for error

As they begin their search for their third manager of the season, Nottingham Forest's Premier League status hangs in the balance.

Under Postecoglou, the Trentside club lost four out of five games in the top-flight, leaving them in the relegation zone as it stands.

At the beginning of September, Marinakis made the decision to sack Nuno Espirito Santo after a disagreement between the pair, but that move is already massively backfiring.

After the disastrous tenure of Postecoglou, Forest must get their next managerial appointment right in order to stave off the growing threat of relegation.
