Paul Robinson claims Georginio Wijnaldum has a crucial role to play next season if Liverpool are to challenge on all fronts as the midfielder closes in on a new long-term deal.

The former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the Reds will be able to attract top players to Anfield this summer to help Jurgen Klopp mount a serious challenge for every trophy.

The Guardian report that the club have held positive talks with Wijnaldum's representatives  over a contract extension which could run until 2024 or 2025.

The 29-year-old's current contract expires in June but it would now appear he is ready to commit his long-term future to the Champions League holders.

Robinson claimed the Reds need to bolster their squad as well as tie key players down if they want to win multiple trophies in 2021.

"I think they have got a strong squad and although Wijnaldum is not the first name on the team sheet he plays a lot of games," he told Football Insider.

"If Liverpool are going to challenge on all fronts next year they will need him to be a part of that.

"They struggled in that respect this season when they had to utilise the squad. They used the youth team in the FA Cup and the League Cup, granted it was a huge fixture pile up but Klopp will want competition in all places.

"If Liverpool go on to win the league they will be able to attract a lot of top players."

Jurgen Klopp's side will resume their title bid on Sunday as they make the short trip to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Merseyside derby.
