Exclusive: Rangers board told to hand senior star unique deal after huge Ibrox update

Alan Hutton has urged Rangers to hand Allan McGregor a rolling contract until he chooses to hang up his boots at Ibrox. 

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has been left raving over the 38-year-old's performances between the sticks since his return to Glasgow in 2018.

As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers are planning to offer the veteran shot-stopper a new contract ahead of January, with his current terms set to expire at the end of the season.

It is understood the Light Blues are likely to offer McGregor a one-year extension, while there is also the possibility of a part-coaching role as he weighs up his options ahead of retirement.

Hutton has insisted the shot-stopper is still playing at the very top of his game and that Rangers should let him keep playing until he decides enough is enough.

Hutton told Football Insider: "Even though he's my best friend, take that out of it, I mean, I would literally give him a contract until he wanted to retire, that's how highly I rate him.

"He's a leading figure, he's in a good place right now, he's very fit, he looks after himself. He's another one, an integral part of that squad as well.

"I would want to tie him down and for me, I would just keep it rolling, he is that good, that good at the moment so it wouldn't surprise me if they wanted to sign him for at least another year."

McGregor has featured a total of 15 times across all competitions this season, including in all five of the club's Europa League fixtures.

His performances have forced summer signing Jon McLaughlin to play second fiddle at Ibrox despite the former Sunderland keeper's impressive early-season form.
