Sunderland have submitted an offer for Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty and are hopeful it will be accepted, Football Insider can reveal.

The League One big hitters have admitted they are working on a deal for the 23-year-old and Gers boss Steven Gerrard is willing to let him go for the second half of the campaign.

A Sunderland source has told Football Insider that the club have tabled a loan offer for Docherty as they look to win the race for his signature.

There is also interest in the central midfielder from Charlton Athletic but Sunderland lead the race at this stage.

Phil Parkinson has subsequently admitted to "initial chats" with Rangers about a Docherty deal but insisted they were now on hold until after Saturday.

Steven Gerrard has told BBC Sport that he is keen for the former Hamilton star to go out on loan and get regular first-team football.

The Ibrox boss has spoken warmly of Docherty's efforts in training this season but he has not used him for a single match since the early weeks of the campaign.

Docherty had an excellent loan spell at Shrewsbury Town last season, scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists from 51 matches in all competitions.

The former Scotland Under-21 international has failed to make much of an impression back at his parent club and has not figured at all since August.
