McAvennie hails 'brilliant' Bielsa as he makes contact over Leeds signing 26-yr-old with release clause

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa's decision to get in contact with Javi Galan could be decisive in securing his signature.

That is according to ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 26-year-old Huesca left-back.

It comes as Leeds close in on the signing of Barcelona's Junior Firpo, although they would surely only sign two left-backs if Ezgjan Alioski quits.

Galan's contract expires in 2022 and his release clause has reportedly dropped from £7million to £3.5m.

McAvennie hailed Bielsa for his "personal touch" in speaking with the defender.

"It would twist your arm, of course," he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

"If the manager phones you and has a chat with you, it's brilliant for the players and it's great for everyone.

"I can see the importance of it. Anyone who is good one-on-one, who can talk to players, the players love that. So I think it's a good personal touch.

"Bielsa is one of these guys who you would run through a brick wall for, isn't he? He speaks Spanish anyway, which is a bonus.

"There were two managers who did it with me and I was delighted. It can make or break a deal."

Galan featured 37 times for Huesca as they finished 18th and were relegated from the Spanish top-flight last term.

He is naturally a left-back but is also accomplished as a left-midfielder.
