Paul Robinson has heaped praise on brilliant passer Ibrahima Konate amid reports he has undergone an initial medical with Liverpool in Paris.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one revealed his admiration for the RB Leipzig 21-year-old who is "strong, powerful and good in the air".

The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed on Monday that the Reds were finalising a deal to bring the centre-half to Anfield ahead of the summer.

French publication RMC Sport claim the France Under-21 international has undergone a portion of a medical with Liverpool in Paris today.

Konate has made 15 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann's Leipzig this season.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Konate's potential arrival, Robinson said: "They desperately need to sign a centre-half.

"The two that they signed in January raise a lot of eyebrows. They looked like stop-gaps, if you like. When all of the centre-halves are fit, those two will not get anywhere near the starting eleven.

"I have seen Konate play a fair few times and he looks strong, powerful, good in the air and he can also play out. I have noticed that he has got a great range of passing as well. When he is pressed by the forwards, he can play that ball over the top to the midfielders or strikers and that is something that Liverpool need.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp grimaces

"They do not want a repeat of this year's situation.

"To get a centre-half of that quality, I think it would be a great signing for them. I like him, he looks like a very good player."
