Aston Villa are set to announce the signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal today after he passed a medical, Football Insider has learned.

The Midlands club are finalising the registration of the Argentine, 28, after the fee and personal terms were finalised.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that Arsenal have accepted an offer of £17million plus a potential £3m of add-ons.

Football Insider reported last week that Villa had tabled a second bid for Martinez of £15million before an improved offer was enough to persuade Arsenal to let him go.

He will become Dean Smith's third senior signing of the window following the captures of striker Ollie Watkins and right-back Matty Cash.

Smith has made the capture of a proven keeper a top priority as Tom Heaton continues his recovery from a knee injury that has sidelined him since the turn of the year.

Martinez was omitted from the Arsenal side that began their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win at Fulham on Saturday.

Bernd Leno started in goal after missing the final weeks of last season due to injury and Matt Macey was on the bench.

Martinez stepped in to replace Leno in June and started the last eight Premier League matches of 2019-20 as well as played a key role in Arsenal's FA Cup triumph.

The imminent Villa signing made 23 appearances for the Gunners last season and impressed not only with his shot-stopping and command of his box but also his distribution from the back.
