New Aston Villa bid for Ward-Prowse expected after source's update - Campbell

Kevin Campbell claims Aston Villa won't hold back in their pursuit of James Ward-Prowse.

The Arsenal icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the Villains' latest transfer move.

It is understood the Saints have no intention of cashing in on the midfielder and will knock back all offers for him this summer.

Ward-Prowse, 26, is a vital cog in the Southampton machine.

The England international scored eight goals and chipped in with eight assists in the Premier League last season.

Campbell insists Villa will return with a better offer and sees a similarity with the club's failed pursuit of Emile Smith-Rowe.

"He's a great player," Campbell told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

"Aston Villa like to do this, don't they?

"They tested the water with Smith-Rowe and now they are doing it with Ward-Prowse.

"They are putting a soft offer in to see if they can get the price before they come back with a new offer, it's coming.

"Southampton are good at that game though, they have done well with transfers over the years.

"Villa won't hold back, they know they have money but they want to spend it wisely."

However, Arsenal confirmed on 22nd July the youngster had signed new terms at the Emirates Stadium.
