Newcastle and Man United could now agree shock 'player swap deal' - Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United and Man United will agree a settlement for Dan Ashworth's move.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the deal could be agreed as part of a player swap deal between the two clubs.

Ashworth was placed on gardening leave at St James’ Park in February after agreeing to join Man United.

Football Insider revealed on 1 May that Newcastle will only fast-track the transfer guru’s move to Man United once they have secured a replacement.

It has been widely reported that the Magpies are demanding around £20million in compensation - a figure the Red Devils are not willing to pay.

Wyness hit out at new Man United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe over his handling of negotiations.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Man United are going to have to pay a negotiated settlement.

“At some stage, one side will blink and they’ll be in a room together - and they’ll hammer it out. 

“It happens all the time in football. I can’t see why this is such a sticking point.

“Someone has to give, and someone has to take. That’s how the two clubs are going to get there.

“It could happen as part of something bigger, a player swap deal between the two clubs, possibly.

“It’s not abnormal to find a way around this problem, but Jim Ratcliffe is a newcomer.

“He’s got to get this done, and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done more quickly.”
