Paul Robinson Exclusive: Spurs to soon announce new deal handing player 'Huge' pay rise

Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham will soon announce a bumper new contract for Japhet Tanganga handing him a "huge wage increase".

The former White Hart Lane shot-stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was surprised the 20-year-old had not already signed a new deal with the club.

Tanganga is into the last sixth months of his current contract which was originally due to expire in June, although Jose Mourinho has said that Spurs have activated the option to extend it until the summer of 2021.

The versatile defender 13 appearances this campaign after being brought in by Jose Mourinho for his debut against league leaders Liverpool in January.

Robinson hoped unrealistic wage expectations were not the reason the youngster had not yet signed a contract with the Lilywhites.

"I am surprised he has not got one already," he told Football Insider. "It will be a huge wage increase from what he was on. He has come in and done so well and he should now be rewarded as a Premier League player.

"He is now starting games ahead of Vertonghen and Alderweireld and is doing so on merit. It is only right he is rewarded and paid the same way.

"As to why he has not yet you hope that the player is not asking for too much or has got over-inflated expectations.

"Daniel Levy is a very clever and shrewd man and I do not think it will be long until it is announced that he has signed a new deal."  

The academy graduate has been utilised across the defence as Mourinho has altered between a back four and a back five of late.

Jan Vertonghen appears less likely to sign a new deal as his eight-year spell in North-London approaches its end.
