Rangers are in talks with Steven Gerrad over a sensational move to bring the Liverpool legend to Ibrox, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim that Mark Allen is leading the talks and that a deal is close.

It would be a controversial appointment and eyebrows have been raised at Ibrox among supporters, but the report claims that Gerrard considers himself up to the task.

Since he retired from playing he has been coaching the Liverpool Under-18s and this would represent a huge step up.

Odds on Gerrard becoming the next manager were slashed after Dave King was spotted at Anfield for the Champions League semi-final against Roma.

Football Insider verdict:

Wow. This is a huge development and would represent a stunning appointment by Rangers. The job is huge and Gerrard has no experience of managing at the top level, but what a coup if he turned out to be their saviour. He'll go head-to-head against former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers in a story that would be considered implausible in a film. Rangers fans might not be convinced and you can understand why. It's a huge gamble that could prove to be another massive mistake or the move that could put Rangers back on the world stage.
