Rangers face a huge task in the January transfer window as they go in search of additions that will help to turn their campaign around.

The Gers have had a hugely tumultuous season so far, and they are still a long way off the pace in the Premiership despite their recent resurgence after Russell Martin's dismissal.

Rangers are keen to add a new striker to their ranks in the January window, as they look to address the gaps left in the squad after some underwhelming recruitment in the summer.

Danny Rohl has delivered some promising results on the pitch of late, and he also looks set to oversee something of a clearout in January, as well as welcoming some fresh additions.

Rangers fans tear into Joe Rothwell as January exit in the pipeline

Football Insider exclusively revealed earlier this week that Joe Rothwell is in line to leave Rangers in January, with interest from multiple English clubs mounting in the midfielder.

The 30-year-old was part of the Gers' summer recruitment effort following the appointment of Martin, but his signing hasn't had the desired effect by any means.

Rothwell has been pushed to the edges of the first-team squad since Rohl took the reins at Ibrox, and he has still featured in just two games since the start of the German's tenure in charge.

As a result, Rangers are unsurprisingly looking to move him on in January, and that has delighted their supporters, who have taken to X to cut into the struggling star.

One fan labelled Rothwell as a "disaster of a player," while another branded him "genuinely awful."

Another supporter even went as far as to suggest that the ex-Southampton is "one of the worst players ever seen at Rangers," while another insisted that he had forgotten that Rothwell was still at the club.

  • @AsTrubludru: "Another one that thought he could come up here and boss it. I wouldn't want him on the U16s."
  • @BritishSos: "Utterly over-hyped and underwhelming. Get rid."
  • @vegababy81: "Lazy, overweight and unfit."

Djeidi Gassama to become Rangers' second January sale after Rothwell

Rangers are also receiving interest in Djeidi Gassama ahead of January, as Villarreal eye a potential deal for the winger.

The ever-increasing level of interest in Rothwell makes it seem fairly inevitable that he will become the Ibrox outfit's first sale of what promises to be a busy January, and Gassama could quickly become their second.

Villarreal have already made contact over a deal for the wideman, and they are expected to progress those talks in the lead-up to the window.

Gassama is another player who has prompted frustration from the Rangers fanbase since his arrival in the summer, as moments of undeniable quality are often interspersed between spells of anonymity.

The Gers have plenty of work to do on their squad in January, but their first two pieces of business may already be clear.
