Paul Robinson "is surprised" Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for Steven Bergwijn this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Harte Lane number one said the 24-year-old could "achieve great things" if he stayed in north London and learned from Antonio Conte.

According to Fabrizio Romano last Sunday (9 January), Spurs have decided to sell the Dutch winger this month with a number of clubs interested in his signature.

Ajax are said to have already tabled a permanent offer for Bergwijn.

He has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract in north London.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his reaction to the news, Robinson said: "I'm surprised to hear that.

"Bergwijn is a player that I like. I thought his speed, his power and his willingness to run would see him fit in well under Antonio Conte. His defensive side of the game is not bad at all and he brings a lot of creativity.

"I can't imagine he's a player that the club will allow to leave easily. He's still young and he's still developing. Under Conte's management I think he could go on to achieve great things. That's why I'm surprised to hear that he might be leaving.

"I think a desire to play is probably one of the reasons behind the move. He's not going to be guaranteed minutes at Spurs behind [Harry] Kane, [Heung-min] Son and Lucas Moura."
