Aston Villa are offering Cameron Archer an improved deal to stop him quitting in January, Football Insider understands.

A Villa source has told Football Insider the club are working on agreeing a deal that includes a big pay hike for Archer and are hopeful a deal can be done ahead of the January window.

Villa are aware of Premier League and European interest in the rising star, who can sign a pre-contract with an overseas team from the turn of the year.

Dean Smith and his coaching staff have a clear first-team plan for Archer after being hugely impressed by his progress.

He has been told he will get minutes this season and the manager was true to his word by starting the youngster in Wednesday's EFL Cup clash against Chelsea.

Villa drew the match at Stamford Bridge 1-1 but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-3 to be eliminated from the competition.

Smith's side had levelled in normal time when Archer demonstrated outstanding technique to steer in a headed equaliser.

It lifted his goal tally to four from two EFL Cup games this season after his hat-trick in the second round win over Barrow.

Villa rejected offers for Archer to go out on loan before the transfer window shut at the end of August.

Manager Smith had revealed there were "certainly a lot of takers for" the young forward.
