Blackburn Rovers have agreed terms of a new two-year contract with defender Dan Pike, Football Insider understands.

The 19-year-old right-back is still waiting for his senior debut but has made the first-team bench three times this season.

A source at Ewood Park has told Football Insider Rovers have reached an agreement to keep the hot prospect tied down until 2023 after a breakthrough in talks.

He has stepped up from the under-18s over the past 12 months and is now a regular for Rovers' under-23 side.

The defender, who has also played in a right-midfield role, started 19 times in 22 appearances in Premier League 2 this term.

His impressive performances at reserve level saw Tony Mowbray hand the youngster a promotion into the senior side.

Pike was named on the bench for league games against Birmingham and Watford at the start of the year.

However, he was unable to edge ahead of senior right back's Ryan Nyambe and Joe Rankin-Costello in the pecking order.

Pike was also an unused substitute in the FA Cup tie versus Doncaster Rovers.

Rovers have now moved to reward the teenager for his development with a new deal at Ewood Park.

It is understood he has agreed to sign a new and improved deal keeping him tied down until 2023.

Pike started his footballing life at Liverpool before joining Rovers at the age of eight.
