Burnley are plotting a move to sign Derby County midfielder Jason Knight, Football Insider understands.

New Clarets manager Vincent Kompany has made the Republic of Ireland international, 21, one of his top targets.

A Burnley source has told Football Insider that they are lining up an offer for Knight as they step up plans to sign him.

Derby face a fight to keep the midfielder following their relegation to League One.

Knight remains one of just five senior players contracted to the club following the intensifying of financial issues at Pride Park.

However, after months of uncertainty, Derby was saved by local businessman David Clowes on Friday (1 July).

Knight signed for Derby in 2017 as a 16-year-old and made his first-team debut on 5 August 2019 in a 2–1 win away at Huddersfield.

He also captained the side on occasion, with the first time coming during Wayne Rooney's first game as manager in January 2021.

During the 2021-22 Championship season he was a key player for the Rams, making 38 appearances and scoring twice.

These outings came in a variety of positions.

Knight was regularly used on both the left and right-wing but also spent time as a central midfielder and right-back on occasion.

Burnley are looking to rejuvenate their squad following their relegation from the Premier League.

Nick Pope has already left the club for Newcastle United in a move reported to be worth £10million.
