Leicester City coach Kolo Toure has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal to become Wigan Athletic's new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The deal is expected to be announced in the next 24 hours.

Brendan Rodgers’ right-hand man has seen off competition from the likes of Everton legend Duncan Ferguson, who was also interviewed by Wigan, to land the post.

Former Blackpool boss Neil Critchley was also in the running, but the Latics hierarchy opted to go for Toure – who is taking his first-ever managerial post.

As well as his work with Leicester, the ex-Liverpool defender also holds an assistant manager role for the Ivory Coast national side.

The two-time Premier League winner hung up his boots while playing for the Hoops in 2017 after making 520 club appearances.

Toure joins Wigan with the Lancashire side marooned in the Championship bottom three.

The managerless side signed off for the mid-season World Cup break with a 2-1 win over near-neighbours Blackpool on Saturday (12 November).

However, that result came on the back of a run of three losses from the club's last four league games.

Wigan are next in action against Millwall on 10 December – giving Toure around three weeks to work with and assess his new squad.

The Latics have one of the worst defensive records in the Championship and have accumulated the second-worst goal difference so far this season.
