Newcastle United can't afford a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson this month, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that the Serie A side have no intention of selling the highly-regarded Brazilian.

Atalanta value Ederson at between £30-40million - a fee far outside Newcastle's capabilities this month.

The Magpies' January business has been heavily restricted due to their need to remain in line with their Financial Fair Play obligations, which has put a move for Ederson on hold.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that they may revive their interest in Ederson in the summer when they are in a stronger financial situation.

Ederson has had an impressive season with the fifth-place Italian club having notched six goals and one assist across 27 appearances in all competitions.

It is believed that Eddie Howe's side have prioritised a new midfielder, but a deal for the 24-year-old is no longer on the cards, this month.

Newcastle had eyed a move for wantaway Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, but as revealed by Football Insider (21 January), they have cooled their interest due to Eddie Howe's reservations about the England international.

Newcastle have slipped to 10th in the Premier League table following four consecutive defeats.
