Tottenham target Lautaro Martinez is in advanced talks to agree a new five-year contract with Inter Milan, Football Insider can reveal.

Spurs held talks with the Serie A champions during the summer over signing the Argentina striker, 24, and he has been open to a Premier League move.

But an industry source has told Football Insider that Inter have moved to fend off interest in Martinez and have offered him an improved contract running until 2026.

That would be a blow to the striker's Premier League suitors, who also include Arsenal.

The Argentine's current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2023.

Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici tried to convince Martinez to move during the summer, when he was valued at £75million.

He is also well aware that Inter are strapped for cash, although the near-£100m sale of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea eased their problems significantly.

Tottenham managed to keep hold of Harry Kane, although there remains great uncertainty over his long-term future.

Spurs were encouraged that Martinez was keen to move to the Premier League, is out of contract in two years and is believed to be on a lower-paid deal than many of Serie A's top attackers.

Martinez was targeted on the back of three outstanding seasons at Inter, where he has developed into one of the Italian league's top attackers.

He has followed up his 19-goal and 11-assist 2020-21 campaign with five goals from eight matches this season.
