Sources: Oxford United agree new deal with Alex Gorrin after Sunderland contact
Alex Gorrin has agreed a new deal with Oxford United, Football Insider understands.
The 28-year-old's contract at the Kassam Stadium was due to expire at the end of next month.
A recruitment source told Football Insider that a number of clubs, including Sunderland were weighing up moves for the midfielder on a free transfer.
However, Oxford United have stepped up their efforts to tie Gorrin down to a new deal in recent weeks.
The Spanish midfielder is now poised to sign a new one-year agreement with the League One outfit.
Gorrin was limited to just 17 appearances across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign because of injury.
He tore his anterior cruciate ligament in an FA Cup tie against Bristol Rovers in November and the injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Gorrin joined the U’s from Motherwell on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.
In total, he has made 101 appearances for the club.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month (16 May) that Sunderland had made an enquiry over Gorrin with a view to signing him on a free transfer.
However, the Black Cats will now have to look elsewhere in a bid to bolster their midfield ahead of the 2022-23 Championship season.
Gorrin spent several years in Sunderland's youth system as a teenager before being released by the club in 2014.
He has also played for Wellington Phoenix and Boavista.
