Sources: Tottenham close to signing Sayers after offer submitted - deal set to be done before 1 January
Tottenham have offered a professional contract to Southend United defender Charlie Sayers, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Premier League giants are set to sign the left-back, 17, after he headed in from the nearby Conference Premier outfit for a trial.
A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Sayers, who is a lifelong Tottenham fan, has been offered a three-year pro deal.
It is expected that he will accept the offer and complete a transfer from Southend, most likely this month.
The left-back, who is a lifelong Spurs fan, caught the attention of youth-team observers by featuring for their Under-18s in the Premier League Cup clash at Fulham last Saturday.
Sayers was named in the starting line-up and did not play for Southend later in the day in their clash at Altrincham.
The deal can be done this month rather than in January as non-league clubs do not abide by transfer window rules.
The source explained that he has made a big impression during his trial at Tottenham and impressed the club's academy coaches.
Tottenham have been in the market for a young left-back after losing Dennis Cirkin, 19, to Sunderland in August, in a deal first revealed by Football Insider.
Marcel Lavinier has been playing left-back for Spurs Under-23s even though he is naturally a right-back.
It has been a meteoric rise for Sayers, who only joined Southend Under-18s from school in April.
He had broken into their first-team squad by August when Phil Brown was still the manager andhas made six senior appearances in total for Southend this season.
