Tottenham have pulled the plug on plans to offload Japhet Tanganga this month, Football Insider understands.

Spurs had been set to loan out the defender, 22, before the transfer window shuts on 31 August.

But a Tottenham source has told Football Insider that Nuno changed his mind ahead of yesterday's surprise opening-day win over champions Man City.

It means the home-grown star is now set to remain at the club and be a key member of the first-team squad.

Tanganga was given the nod to start at right-back ahead of substitute Matt Doherty and axed Serge Aurier, who failed to make the 20-man squad.

He responded with a man-of-the match display that drew warm praise from Nuno.

"All the team did very well but Japhet was huge today," the manager told the media. "He faced too many one-v-ones today against fantastic players and he dealt fantastic with the situation."

Tanganga was wanted by Galatasaray earlier in the window amid doubts over where he fit in under Nuno.

But it is Doherty and Auriers' futures which are now in major doubt going into the final weeks of the window.

Tanganga has the chance to nail down the right-back spot.

Sunday's defensive set-up favoured his playing style, which is not as adventurous or attacking based as Aurier and Doherty.

He is certainly a popular figure among supporters, who sang "Japhet Tanganga, he's one of our own" on a number of occasions, including when he was substituted.

Tanganga, who can also play at right-back, has made 25 senior appearances for Spurs since graduating from their youth set-up.
