Wolves have given the green light for rising star Dion Sanderson to leave for good this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

The 21-year-old has just completed an outstanding loan at Sunderland as they narrowly missed out on promotion.

But a source has told Football Insider Wolves are willing to offload the young centre-back despite their change of manager.

Ex-boss Nuno Espirito Santo did not rate Sanderson as a future Premier League star and believes he is more of a Championship player.

Wolves need to raise cash to fund a summer rebuild under soon-to-be-appointed Bruno Lage.

Sanderson is deemed as expendable and an offer of £2million-plus is likely to be enough to secure a transfer.

Football Insider learned on June 1 that Sunderland are working on a deal to sign Sanderson permanently.

But they face competition from multiple Championship clubs and their League One status could be a stumbling block.

They hope the relationships he built at the club will give them an edge over their rivals.

The defender enjoyed a fine season at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats reached the play-offs.

He made 28 appearances for Sunderland across all competitions before suffering a season-ending injury in mid-April that meant he missed out on the play-off campaign.

Football Insider learned on April 10 his performances had caught the eye of Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town.

The Englishman's Wolves contract expires in the summer of 2022 and he has made just one appearance for the senior side.
