Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Wolves defender Dion Sanderson this summer, Football Insider understands.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider the Magpies are also keeping tabs on the centre-back Lee Johnson described as an "absolute Rolls Royce".

Sanderson has caught the eye of top-flight and Championship scouts since joining Sunderland on loan last summer.

He has publicly stated his intention to stake a claim for the senior side at Molineux next term.

However, he would be open to a move if Wolves choose to sell as he looks for regular first-team action.

A source at Molineux told Football Insider a £2million bid may be enough for a suitor to secure his capture.

Sanderson was forced to bide his time at Sunderland as he made just one league start in 12 games.

However, he has since emerged as one of the Black Cats' top performers with 14 consecutive starts in defence.

Born and bred around Wolverhampton, Sanderson has long been considered a hot prospect at Molineux.

Despite the club's high expectations, he has still only made one senior appearance, which came back in 2019.

Newcastle currently have a host of centre-back options on their books, including Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Fabian Schar.

However, Federico Fernandez's contract is set to expire this summer, while Schar's runs out next year.
