Paul Robinson has claimed Alessandro Bastoni would be "a statement signing" for Tottenham next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the 23-year-old is a player who could take Antonio Conte's side to "the next level."

Spurs were interested in signing Bastoni in the summer window but could not prize him away from Inter Milan.

According to The Sun (9 November), Tottenham remain keen on signing the centre-half.

Conte is keen to upgrade his defence when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Bastoni will have 18 months left on his deal at the San Siro at the turn of the year.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the potential signing of the Italy international, Robinson said: "Bastoni would be a statement signing.

"That is the type of signing Spurs need to make if they want to go onto the next level. They need to get that level of player now.

"That is what Conte is hinting at in his press conferences when he says he needs two or three transfer windows. Conte needs to be given the time and the funds to turn Spurs into a side who challenge consistently at the top of the table."

Bastoni has been a key player for Inter Milan in the 2022-23 campaign.

He has contributed three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions.
