Tottenham defender Djed Spence is set to be given the opportunity to impress in Ange Postecoglou's first team this season, sources have told Football Insider.

The right-back has spent the last 18 months out on loan but is now set to provide cover and competition for Pedro Porro as Emerson Royal closes in on an exit.

Royal is poised to join Italian giants AC Milan in a deal reportedly worth more than £15million after add-ons.

Sources say "the door is fully open" for Spence to prove he should remain in Postecoglou's plans for the 2024-25 campaign.

That stance represents a huge U-turn at Spurs, with Football Insider revealing in April that the right-back was one of multiple senior players expected to leave in the off-season.

But Spence has impressed in pre-season and could now be given the chance to feature regularly in the Premier League.

He spent last season on loan with Leeds and Genoa, making 23 appearances across all competitions and registering one assist.

The former England Under-21 international has played just six times for Tottenham since joining from Middlesbrough two years ago.

Spence is under contract with the Lilywhites until June 2027.

He could be part of the squad when Postecoglou's side start their Premier League campaign away at Leicester next week (19 August).
