Tottenham have opened preliminary talks with Hugo Lloris over a new contract, Football Insider understands.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that discussions are underway with Lloris over a deal that would see him play the rest of his career at the club.

The 33-year-old has two years left on his current deal but the north Londoners want to hand him a lucrative long-term deal.

Jose Mourinho and the Spurs hierarchy still have great faith in Lloris, who is one of their top earners on more than £100,000-a-week.

The World Cup winner has attracted growing criticism from supporters for a series of high-profile errors in recent seasons.

He missed a big chunk of last season with a dislocated elbow sustained after conceding a very soft goal but was re-installed as the number one as soon as he was fully recovered.

Mourinho sees Lloris as his number one, with new arrival Hart and last season's deputy Paulo Gazzaniga providing cover and competition.

Lloris has made 325 appearances for Tottenham since signing from Lyon for £11m in 2012.

He is also the captain of the France national team and has won 114 caps for his country.

Gazzaniga, 28, emerged with credit from his extended spell in goal last season, when he made 25 appearances in total.
