Troy Parrott: Coventry City prepare to ‘take a gamble’ on signing AZ Alkmaar star

Troy Parrott has emerged as a leading target for Coventry City as they aim to bolster their squad following their promotion to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable season with AZ Alkmaar and the Ireland national team, and could now be set to return to English football.

Frank Lampard is keen to bring in top-quality players to the CBS Arena as he hopes to establish his side in the top flight, and believes significant investment is needed.

Former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that signing Parrott would be a gamble but could pay off for the Sky Blues.

The Republic of Ireland striker last played in the Premier League for Tottenham in the 2019-20 season, but could be set to return as part of Coventry’s ambitious plans.

Could Coventry make a move to sign Troy Parrott?

Football Insider revealed last month that Coventry are planning to back Lampard with a significant transfer budget as they aim to remain in the Premier League.

They are set to assess their squad over the summer break and identify key positions to improve, with the addition of a new striker already tipped as a priority.

Parrott’s form in the Eredivisie and UEFA Conference League has alerted a number of Premier League clubs to his situation, with Coventry the latest to plot a move.

“Coventry have been having a look at Troy Parrott,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They would be willing to take the gamble on bringing him back to the Premier League, but that’s what it is at the moment, a gamble.

“He’s shown over in the Netherlands that he can score goals and he’s done it for Ireland as well, but doing that in the Premier League is a different challenge.

“But Coventry have to be ambitious with their plans, and if they think they’d be able to lure him in, then it could be something they look to do.

“They’re now competing with other Premier League clubs for these players, they want to back the manager and sometimes you have to take risks.

“If they’ve watched him and feel he could replicate his form in the Premier League, then it will be well worth the gamble in their position.”

Who else is interested in signing Parrott?

Coventry are far from the only club to have taken note of the striker’s performances this season, and they will face stiff competition for his signature this summer.

In the Premier League, the likes of Leeds Untied and West Ham have both been strongly linked with moves for the Ireland international should he become available.

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed in March that Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan want Parrott and could make moves for him when the window opens.

Having thrived since leaving English football, he could be tempted to remain on the continent, with a move to the Bundesliga or Serie A set to appeal.

Interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs could make it difficult for Coventry to do a deal, but they hope the allure of Premier League football could tempt him.
