Two English sides chasing Newcastle fringe star, loan deal expected - reliable journalist

By Will Butcher

Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is interesting League One side Fleetwood Town and League Two side Wycombe Wanderers, according to a reliable journalist.

Evening Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder claimed on his personal Twitter account that both clubs are eyeing a loan move for the 20-year-old goalkeeper.

The England Under-20 international, who won the World Cup with Paul Downing’s Young Lions earlier in the summer, is highly rated on Tyneside.

However, his chances of first-team football are slim under manager Rafa Benitez, with the former Liverpool boss looking to bring another goalkeeper to the north east.

The likes of Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow sit ahead of him in the pecking order, as well as Tim Krul but the Holland international is expected to leave the club with Brighton taking him on loan.

Woodman is yet to feature for Newcastle’s first team but was loaned to Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock last season, conceding just 16 goals in 15 games and keeping four clean sheets.

A loan is most likely to occur for Newcastle’s number 41, with three years remaining on his current contract at St. James’ Park.

Football Insider verdict

In what seems like a deal that would suit all parties, Woodman must leave the club before the end of the transfer window with his chances of first-team football almost at zero. The goalkeeper desperately needs first-team football to further his career, after starring with Kilmarnock last season as well as proving crucial in England Under-20’s World Cup winning campaign in South Korea this summer. Woodman has already shown he possesses the kind of talent required to make an impression in the third tier of English football, and should prefer a move to Fleetwood over Wycombe.

In other Newcastle transfer news, a double-defender deal is on the cards at St. James’ Park.
