'Unbelievable' Premier League star tipped to follow Coutinho to Aston Villa - pundit

Kevin Phillips has suggested Philippe Coutinho’s arrival at Aston Villa could open the door for the “unbelievable” signing of Lucas Digne.

The former Claret and Blue striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the signing of the 29-year-old could act as a “massive pull” for Villa.

Aston Villa confirmed yesterday (7 January) that Coutinho will spend the rest of the season on loan at Villa Park.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (5 January) that the Midlands club have also registered their interest in signing Everton defender Lucas Digne this month.

Phillips hailed the “ambition” at Aston Villa as they look to join England’s elite.

When asked if other top-level players could follow Coutinho through the door, he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “Yeah, it certainly could open the door for other signings.

“He is only on loan with an option to buy, which could be difficult – it might not end up working out.

“However, it just shows the ambition at Villa at the moment, wow. To attract that sort of player could be a massive pull for others.

“Lucas Digne, if he were to follow Coutinho through the door then that would be two unbelievable signings.

43-cap France international Digne is out of favour at Everton following a bust-up with Rafa Benitez at Everton.

Coutinho joins Villa from Barcelona having cost the Blaugrana a reported £142m in 2018.

Aston Villa sit 13th in the Premier League after 19 games.

Steven Gerrard’s side face Man United in the FA Cup on Monday.
