Kevin Phillips has claimed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should not win the Manager of the Season award.

The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested if Chris Wilder gets Sheffield United into the top five the accolade should be given to him.

The Reds are 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League, having only dropped five points in the entirety of this campaign.

Klopp has won the Manager of the Month award in all but two of the months so far this season.

Chris Wilder is still yet to collect the accolade but Phillips insisted the Englishman would get his vote if he gets the Blades into Europe.

“Unfortunately for Klopp, it is Chris Wilder for me,” he told Football Insider.

“If he manages to get them into the top four or five on the budget they have had and with the players they have got… Blimey! They have no top stars, just a great team ethic and, spirit. What he has built there when you compare it to the budget of the top six – it is an incredible job.

“They deserve to be where they are because of the football they play as well. Everyone knows how they play and people have time to work out a system to try and stop them and a lot of them cannot. He believes in his own philosophy and he buys players to fit into his system.

“If Sheffield United do not finish in the top five I would give it to Klopp, hands down but if Chris Wilder finishes in that top five, on that budget, I would certainly give it to him.”

United are currently seventh, two points off of fifth-placed Manchester United and five points off of fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.

In other Liverpool news, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider clubs will be “queuing up” to take Reds midfielder this summer.
