'Unluckiest footballer out there' - Bent Exclusive: 'Brilliant' Spurs player at rock bottom

Darren Bent suggests that Tottenham winger Lucas Moura is at rock bottom after his post-lockdown performances.

The former Spurs and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the Brazilian has not been given the chance to build up any consistency after coming in and out of the starting XI.

The 27-year-old has started three of the club’s five league games since the restart but was on the bench for Thursday’s 0-0 draw against Bournemouth.

Having seen the winger snubbed for big games despite some outstanding performances, Bent suggests the former PSG man has suffered a dip in his self-belief.

Asked why Lucas has been off his game, Bent told Football Insider: “It’s probably his confidence because listen, Lucas Moura, he’s got to be the unluckiest footballer that’s out there.

“I’ve seen him play exceptionally well, fantastically well, brilliant – as we spoke about last year, the Champions League final where he scores a hat-trick in the semi-final to get his team to the final and then gets dropped.

“I remember other big games, he scores a couple goals and then gets dropped. For Lucas Moura, I don’t think he’s been allowed to build up any real consistency at Spurs. He hasn’t looked the same player since he came back from lockdown, that’s maybe a little bit of rust, maybe he’s not sure with how the team’s playing.

“First and foremost, he’s not sure if he’s going to be playing this week or that week.”

Lucas has played 43 times across all competitions this season, with seven goals and three assists to his name.

Jose Mourinho started Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela on the wings against Bournemouth, with Heung-min Son dropped.

In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that club have tabled attacker lucrative contract and huge signing on fee.
