Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce

Darren Bent has been left raving over Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden after seeing him score the winner over Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The former Aston Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 24-year-old often goes under the radar at St James’ Park and he deserved the plaudits for his winning goal.

Hayden headed home Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross in injury time to give Steve Bruce and his men a 1-0 win at St James’ Park over Frank Lampard’s side.

Bent says that the defensive midfielder rarely gets the plaudits due to his role in the side but says he plays a crucial part of Newcastle’s success.

Bent told Football Insider: “He’s been one of them players in there who have been an unsung hero. He’s not really got the plaudits that maybe he deserves.

“He always puts in a good shift, scored a good goal – I know you’ve got to question the goalkeeper but it was a still a great result for them.

“He played really well and he’s becoming one of those guys that you automatically have to pick him every game.

“He might not do the spectacular stuff like spraying the passes – you have people like Shelvey for that – but he’s one of those guys who allows Shelvey to go on and do what he does.

“He does all the dirty stuff. From a fans’ point of view, they might look at it and think: ‘What does this guy really do?’ but he’ll be appreciated more by the guys who play with him.”

Hayden has a total of 117 appearances under his belt since signing from Arsenal, with 70 of those games coming in the Premier League.
