Rangers are braced for offers for Borna Barisic this summer but manager Steven Gerrard does not want to lose him, Football Insider understands.
The Croatia international has become one of the club’s biggest assets after a second season that occasionally touched impressive heights.
Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club expect only Alfredo Morelos to generate more interest among their first-team squad this summer.
Clubs across Europe, including a number of Serie A big hitters, are keeping tabs on Barisic’s situation.
Gerrard regards Barisic as key member of the team that will attempt to stop Celtic securing a 10th consecutive league title next season.
Rangers are well placed to keep the left-back, 27, or at least secure a major fee for him, as he signed a new four-year contract at the end of January that ties him to the club until the summer of 2024.
The new deal will run two years beyond Barisic’s last deal which had been signed when he joined from NK Osijek in August 2018.
It means he will be paid more than £20,000-a-week and is worth more than £4.5million across the four years.
Gerrard has spoken generously of Barisic’s improvement after a mixed first campaign left his Rangers future in major doubt.
He made 39 appearances in the recently-completed season and was a reliable creative source, contributing an impressive 14 assists as well as two goals.
Rangers signed a new left-back in Calvin Bassey, 20, on Saturday but he is not coming in as Barisic’s replacement.
The 20-year-old is instead set to provide cover and competition for the Croatian following the releases of Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed to sign £3million player from Premier League club after West Ham bid knocked back.
