Ayoze Perez has sent a heartfelt message to Newcastle fans after the 3-0 win against Southampton, after his grandmother passed away three days before the match.

Perez played the full 90 minutes in an emphatic win over Southampton on Saturday, and put in a solid performance, made even more impressive by his message.

Perez sent the tweet on Monday morning, saying it had been a "very hard week" and ended with a battling "We keep fighting."

The win moved newcastle to five points above the relegation zone and plunged Southampton into trouble.

They're now just one point and one place off the relegation trapdoor.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle fans will love this message from Perez. It shows real heart to put in a 90-minute shift after losing the person who he said was like a second mother to him. It shows how Rafa Benitez has galvanised the squad, despite all the off-the-pitch troubles at St James' Park. He might not gave been able to get the players he wanted in the summer, but the ones he does have are committed to the cause, and that's all the Newcastle fans can ask for.
