Wenham slams 'laughing' fans as Deeney lifts lid on possible Tottenham transfer
Troy Deeney would have been a bigger success than Carlos Vinicius if he had signed for Tottenham last summer.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
On 8 October, Deeney, 33, told the Evening Standard that he held a phone conversation regarding joining Tottenham after Watford’s relegation.
The striker, now at Birmingham City, stayed at Watford while Spurs went on to loan Vinicius from Benfica.
Wenham doesn’t understand some of the ridicule he has seen from Tottenham fans regarding Deeney’s potential move.
“People may have laughed, but I like Deeney as a player,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He gives his all and he’s proven in the Premier League. He would have played the same games as Vinicius did, against the likes of Marine.
“Vinicius only had one league start, I think Deeney would have been significantly better.
“That’s just my opinion. He’s a massive character and I think he would have done well.
“For example, would I have liked Deeney to come on in the late stages when holding a 1-0 lead? Yes, I would.
“He understands football, I don’t know why people are laughing, I would have taken him.
“He would have done well in the early rounds of the Europa League, I’m sure of it.
“Even now, Deeney is better than Vinicius. When it comes down to scoring goals in the Premier League, it’s an easy choice.”
Vinicius scored one goal in nine Premier League outings for Tottenham.
However, he did bag six goals in the Europa League.
