Wenham urges Tottenham fans to 'get off his back' as Dier hit by 'another blow'

Tottenham fans need to get off Eric Dier’s back and give him a chance to find his best form.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Dier, 27, scored a comical own goal in the dying moments of Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Newcastle on Sunday.

The defender steered the ball past a helpless Hugo Lloris despite very little pressure from the home side.

This came amid mounting criticism from Spurs fans after some poor performances in September.

Wenham reminded Tottenham fans that Dier was nominated for the player of the month away earlier this season and urged them to cut the player some slack.

“It frustrates me, to be honest,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He had a really good game up until that point. There are people who don’t like him for whatever reason or don’t rate him.

“They now have another reason to criticise him and I don’t think that’s fair.

“It’s a real shame because those are the moments you are remembered by, it’s another blow.

“People forget he was nominated for the Premier League player of the month award in August.

“He just can’t catch a break. I honestly think he should be ahead of Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady in the England setup.

“He works really well with Romero in my opinion and, as I’ve said before, I hope he keeps his place.

“I hope Tottenham fans can get off his back a bit.”
