Keown: This is why Carroll stunner is PL goal of the season
By Russell Edge
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has named Andy Carroll’s superb strike for West Ham against Crystal Palace as his goal of the season.
The former Newcastle striker pulled off an acrobatic scissor kick against the Eagles back in January, helping the Hammers on the way to a 3-0 victory, his goal the second of the match.
After the match Carroll told BBC Sport that the strike was the best goal he had ever scored.
It is one of a number of sublime strikes fans up and down the country have witnessed this season, with Emre Can’s overhead effort for Liverpool against Watford the latest to come about.
However, Keown believes it is Carroll’s effort which stands above the rest due to the fact it was very clearly deliberate.

Answering questions on the Daily Mail’s website, Keown wrote: “The scorpion kicks by Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier in the season – there is an element of pot luck with these kinds of goal.
“You can see on their faces that the players are as surprised as the fans.
“Carroll’s goal ranks above those strikes because he meant it.”
The 28-year-old striker has suffered with a number of injuries this season, including a groin strain which has kept him out of recent fixtures, but nothing could stop his impressive strike.
Keown paid credit to Carroll’s ability in pulling off what was a difficult opportunity, and also to the situation which surrounded the fixture.
“When the cross came in he looked at it, lined it up and scored a sensational goal,” the 50-year-old told the Daily Mail.
“It came after a difficult week in which Slaven Bilic revealed Dimitri Payet’s intentions to leave the club.
“Carroll’s sublime strike proved that the team could thrill without their wantaway star.”
The Hammers host Tottenham on Friday night knowing that a victory could mathematically secure their place in the Premier League for next season.
