Why West Ham must offer new contract to this in-form 24-year-old

COMMENT By Will Butcher

West Ham should reward midfielder Pedro Obiang with a new contract as he continues to shine in the middle of the park.

The 24-year-old has been in wonderful form for the Hammers this season alongside captain Mark Noble, as his tireless work ethic begins to prove fruitful for the Spaniard.

Former Sampdoria star Obiang scored his first goal for the club against Southampton last weekend in the 3-1 win at St. Mary’s Stadium, as he continues to go from strength to strength.

Now, with just two years remaining on his current deal, Obiang should be offered an extended stay and a bumper pay rise as manager Slaven Bilic looks to build his side around him.

TalkSPORT claim Obiang is the most deserving of a new deal at the London Stadium, despite the likes of Adrian and Alvaro Arbeloa entering their final six months with West Ham.

Although not a regular feature of the Hammers side last term, Obiang has added a maturity and intelligence to his game both on and off the ball.

Known for his ability to constantly hassle opponents, Obiang now looks to reserve his energy and apply pressure in the right areas in order to force a a mistake more efficiently.

West Ham’s number 14 has improved vastly when in possession. Last season, he looked under pressure when looking to pass or drive forward, but that has changed this time round.

That has shown in manager Bilic’s faith in the spirited midfielder, as he continues to inspire the Hammers in their resurgent Premier League form that has seen them rise to ninth.

With other top-flight clubs around Europe likely to be taking note on Obiang’s superb displays, the east London club should look to tie down their midfield star as soon as possible.
