Amanda Staveley to 'knock London Stadium down' and build new '£1bn' West Ham ground

Amanda Staveley could look to completely rebuild the London Stadium if she comes aboard as an owner at West Ham United.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that a deal of that size would be cost upwards of £1billion.

There is yet to be a resolution to the current ownership situation in East London, with Daniel Kretinsky pushing back against Staveley's arrival.

It was understood that the Czech billionaire had a deal in place to acquire the Gold Family's stake in West Ham, only for their heads to be turned by the former Newcastle United figure.

Now, The Times have revealed that should Staveley be successful in buying a significant stake in the Hammers, she would explore purchasing the London Stadium as well.

It is understood that the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, is already open to discussions, though any major changes would have to wait until after the 2029 World Athletics Championships, if it is awarded to the capital.

Total rebuild of the London Stadium would cost '£1bn'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson suggested that a total rebuild of the stadium would not be impossible, but it would take an eye-watering amount of money.

"First of all, it would be an expensive deal. It won't be for the club. Presumably, they'll put it in a separate vehicle and fund it separately," he said.

"I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that they can because I think UK Athletics would have an issue with it being sold.

"I guess what they're trying to do, ultimately, is to acquire the site and knock the whole thing down and start again, which brings a whole raft of its own issues.

"And not least the fact that it would cost at least, it's got to be £1billion. It's got to be. To build, to knock it down, remove it, and rebuild it.

"It's got to be one billion. How will that ever make sense?"

Why could Amanda Staveley get a bargain deal for the London Stadium?

The majority of fans would expect the purchasing of any stadium to come at an eye-watering fee, but that might be the case in East London.

Built for the 2012 Olympics, the London Stadium costs taxpayers a lot of money to upkeep, meaning that it could be available for £50m.

West Ham have, understandably, been praised for their deal, with the stadium only costing the club £4.4m while in the Premier League, and even less now.

But the Hammers' relegation has only meant that London taxpayers are being forced to pay more, which is why Khan is said to be open to a sale.
