West Ham have new 'issue' as London Stadium deal struck - Stefan Borson

West Ham United could face fresh problems over access to the London Stadium after striking a deal with UK Athletics.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Hammers could be forced to give up their home venue for some games.

Of course, with the World Athletic Championships coming to London in 2029, this problem is a while away, but it'll be here sooner than many realise.

As part of the UK's bid for the competition, UK Athletics struck a deal with West Ham and the London Stadium, which is often used for sports other than football.

This has not been an issue in recent years, with events taking place outside of the footballing calendar, but that might not be the case in 2029.

Should events be taking place during the 2029/2030 campaign, the Hammers will have to strike an agreement of their own to play several consecutive away games to avoid clashes.

West Ham to give up the London Stadium in 2029

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson revealed that not only will West Ham have to vacate the London Stadium, but the financial benefit from doing so won't be very high.

"I think the way the deal works is that it benefits the London Development Corporation, I think from memory," he said.

"I think in some ways, it can be a negative for West Ham because I think they're required to give up the stadium for certain dates or certain events.

"So there could be an issue in terms of home games and timing of home games. But I don't think financially they'll gain from that.

"I might be wrong, but I can't remember the small print that says that they are. One of the reasons that they got a really good deal is because they have some exposure to UK Athletics once in the stadium."

London Stadium faithful prepared for 2026-27

Very few will be concerned about the World Athletics Championships, with still three years until it kicks off. All focus will be on the 2026-27 campaign.

Unsurprisingly, Nuno Espirito Santo's side are expected to win the Championship outright, having been a surprise contender due to relegation last term.

Despite losing Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, the Hammers still have a very strong side for the second tier, and are likely to get stronger.

The likes of Troy Parrott, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, and Simon Adingra are both being heavily linked, though arrivals are not close just yet.
