Coventry City in hunt to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos - ex-Sky Blues No2
Coventry City are plotting a move to sign West Ham star Konstantinos Mavropanos in plans to capitalise on their Premier League relegation.
Frank Lampard's side have been assessing the best talents from last season's relegated Premier League sides as they aim to bolster their squad this summer.
The addition of a new centre-back is still high on their list of priorities, and the West Ham defender has been identified as an upgrade on some of their current options.
Former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that Mavropanos is firmly on the Sky Blues' radar and his potential availability has placed them on alert.
Mavropanos is considered highly likely to leave the London Stadium this summer and is no longer happy at West Ham, placing a number of interested clubs on alert.
However, Coventry are not the only club looking to capitalise on the situation, as they will face competition from Premier League rivals including Leeds United.
Could Coventry City beat rivals to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos?
Football Insider revealed on 16 July that Mavropanos is pushing to leave West Ham this summer, with Leeds United among the clubs ready to make a move for him.
Coventry are also keen, despite closing in on the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Aurele Amenda, as they are keen to bolster the position with multiple new signings.
It remains to be seen whether the Sky Blues can pull off a deal for Mavropanos given the rival interest in his signature, but he is now firmly on their radar.
"Coventry have to be smart with their spending this summer," Brown told Football Insider.
"When you first come up into the Premier League, it's difficult because you want to strengthen the squad in pretty much every position to help cope with the step up.
"One thing you can do is look at the clubs that have gone down and see if any of their better players are going to be available.
"At West Ham, it looks like Mavropanos will be available for example, so Coventry could do with a player like that to strengthen at the back as an upgrade on their current options.
"Bobby Thomas is spoken about very highly there, but it's a position where they could certainly improve, and if Mavropanos is available then he will be very much on their radar."
Will Leeds United rivals Coventry to sign Mavropanos?
Despite newly-growing interest from Coventry in Mavropanos, Leeds are being heavily tipped to make a move for the Greece international in this transfer window.
Leeds are assessing a number of centre-backs to strengthen Daniel Farke's side following the £20million sale of Pascal Struijk to Brighton and have been eyeing multiple targets.
Brown told Football Insider that Leeds are interested in signing Mavropanos and could make a move if the deal suits them, given their summer transfer plans.
The Greece international has endured a mixed spell at West Ham, but his performances towards the end of last season caught the eye despite the club's relegation.
There is also interest from a number of Bundesliga clubs including Borussia Dortmund, which is expected to be his preferred destination this summer.
