West Ham set sights on move to sign winger who has already lit up the World Cup

West Ham United are among a number of English clubs keeping tabs on the performances of Watford star Nestory Irankunda this summer.

The 20-year-old has already lit up the World Cup after scoring Australia's opening goal in their impressive 2-0 win against Turkey in Vancouver.

His performances for Watford over the last season have already placed him firmly on clubs' radars, with the Hammers among those potentially looking to do a deal.

Former West Ham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the East London club have been tracking Irankunda and will keep an eye on his World Cup displays.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side have been forced to change their transfer plans after suffering relegation from the Premier League, with new targets being assessed.

Meanwhile, with the possibility of big-name exits on the wing including Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen, the addition of a new wide-man could be key.

Could West Ham make a move to sign Nestory Irankunda?

Brown told Football Insider in March that West Ham would be forced to sell Summerville after suffering relegation, with work already underway to identify replacements.

Irankunda is somebody who has emerged on their radar, alongside of a number of Premier League clubs who could capitalise on instability at Vicarage Road.

His contract at Watford is set to run until 2030, potentially making any move difficult, but the Hammers

"By all accounts, Irankunda has had a very strong season in the Championship," Brown told Football Insider.

"That's the type of player West Ham are going to have to look at now, because it will be difficult for them to compete with Premier League clubs for top signings.

"They're at risk of losing a couple of wingers, so it's a position they will need to stregnthen, and he is already showing he can perform at that level.

"His performances at the World Cup will do him no harm either, he scored a big goal in front of the world, so that's bound to attract interest from potential suitors.

"I always say, you can't sign a player based on what you see at the World Cup, but West Ham will have been watching Irankunda and how he has performed for Watford.

"Then, they can use his performances for Australia to back up what they already know, whether that's positive or negative.

"West Ham won't be the only club aware of him, I'm sure, but it could be a move that works for both him and the player if they can agree a deal with Watford.

"There's always a lot of upheaval at Watford with the players and the manager, so West Ham could take advantage of that now."

Which other wingers could laeve West Ham this summer?

Irankunda is not the only winger being linked with a move to the London Stadium this summer, with the position emerging as a key area of concern this summer.

Bowen is still the subject of ongoing speculation, while Adama Traore is set to leave East London upon the expiry of his contract later this month.

Football Insider revealed on 14 June that Wolves are keen to sign Traore and are now working on a deal to bring him back to Molineux after his London Stadium departure.

The 30-year-old spent just six months at West Ham, having been brought to the club by Nuno to add a different dimention to their attacking options.

Wolves are now keen to reunite with the winger in a similar deal to their move to bring Raul Jimenez back to the club to compete in the Championship
