West Ham shoot themselves in the foot after latest Callum Wilson transfer developments
West Ham United supporters were disappointed not to see Callum Wilson's contract extended, and the feeling was clearly mutual.
After Nuno Espirito Santo's side were relegated to the Championship, the exit-bound striker took so social media to voice his upset.
He finished the campaign on seven goals and one assist, all of which came in the Premier League, but it wasn't enough to save the Hammers from their fate.
The majority of fans will argue that he was criminally underused, starting just 11 of the 32 games he played in the league, mainly coming on as a late substitute at the London Stadium.
It was often a situation that baffled, but given his experience, it would have made total sense to slide new terms across the table this summer.
Even if it were another play-to-pay-type agreement, Wilson's knowledge and talent would have been invaluable. It looks as though other clubs can see this, just not West Ham.
Brentford open talks for Callum Wilson
According to The Athletic (30 June), Brentford are in talks to sign the 34-year-old free agent, seeing him become one of their multiple targets.
The Bees already have Igor Thiago, who notched 25 goals last season, while Kevin Schade and Dango Ouattara are both capable of playing through the middle.
Keith Andrews' side narrowly missed out on European football last term, and the addition of Wilson could make all the difference in 2026-27.
This all makes the Hammers' decision not to extend his contract all the more confusing. If a Premier League team want him, why wouldn't a recently relegated one?
In a season where the Irons could lose several superstars, such as Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes, Nuno could have had a former England international at his disposal.
Which other Premier League club is interested?
Unsurprisingly, the Bees aren't alone in their interest, with Coventry City putting an offer on the table for the 34-year-old centre-forward.
Frank Lampard can also see how valuable he could be next season. These clubs don't appear to be concerned by his recent injury struggles.
So once again, why wouldn't West Ham take a chance on him?
It makes absolutely no sense, and it is only a matter of time before the Hammers are regretting their decision not to offer a new contract.
