West Ham should regret Freddie Potts decision, 92-touch display speaks volumes
Freddie Potts swapped the chaotic nature of the Championship to battling some of Europe's giants in the Champions League.
As West Ham United were relegated from the Premier League, the 23-year-old played a bit-part role, with just 12 starts to his name in the league.
Supporters were crying out to see more of him in the middle of the park. Instead, he was sold to Club Brugge for just over £10million in the summer.
The reaction to the deal was mixed, to say the least. Some never expected him to make it at the London Stadium, but others wanted to give him a chance in the second tier.
It's important not to dwell on those who no longer play for the club, but when one of your academy graduates is starring in Europe, it's difficult not to.
And after Potts' last display on Wednesday, 21 October, they hierarchy might be regretting their actions ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Freddie Potts is loving life at Club Brugge
Potts played the full 90 minutes as Club Brugge claimed a 3-0 win over Lens in mid-week, and he was at the very centre of everything good.
He completed 92 per cent of his passes, seven of which were line-breaking, made two tackles, two interceptions and four recoveries, while also winning three fouls [FotMob].
The 23-year-old entered into 12 duels, coming out with a 50 per cent win-rate, was only dribbled past once, all while taking control with 92 touches.
Back at the London Stadium, Mohamadou Kante, Tomas Soucek, Arne Engels and Divine Mukasa are all fighting for the midfield spots.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, there is no doubt that Potts would thrive, but he's now living it large with the Belgian giants in the Champions League.
Who else should be sold by West Ham?
There are several players who probably deserved to be sold way before Potts was sacrificed during the last summer window.
Niclas Fullkrug and Jean-Clair Todibo desperately need to be sold once they return from their season-long loans, and they aren't the only ones.
Edson Alvarez's future remains unsolved, as does Maxwel Cornet and Pablo's, with the latter not yet winning everyone over in East London.
Right now, all focus is on winning promotion back to the Premier League, but those behind the scenes must be prepared for the January window.
