Darren Bent has insisted Liverpool are not desperate enough to sign free agent Daryl Janmaat after Joe Gomez’s injury.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Spurs and England forward claimed the club were not “scraping the barrel” for defensive cover yet.
Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Gomez will be out for the season despite the club publicly refusing to put a timescale on his recovery.
TEAMTalk report the Reds have been offered former Newcastle United and Watford defender Janmaat as short-term cover.
The 31-year-old has been without a club since his Hornets contract was terminated in October.
Asked by Football Insider whether the Dutchman would be able to step up to the demands of Liverpool, Bent said:
“For me, he’s not at the right level but at the same time sometimes when you’re desperate we’ve seen Liverpool before make crazy moves like when they signed Steven Caulker. They were struggling for defenders and they signed him and put him up front!
“It all comes down to how desperate they actually are. Right now they seem to be pretty desperate because they’re running out of defenders.
“You have to think to yourself for a club like Liverpool they don’t really have to be that desperate.
“They’re the Premier League champions, they won the Champions League a couple years back.
“They’ve not really got anything to worry about as much because everybody would love to go there and play. Everybody wants to go and play for Jurgen Klopp, everybody wants to go play with Salah, Mane, Van Dijk and these characters.
“They don’t have a problem attracting these players. They won’t have to scrape the barrel just to find anything that works.”
